Renters Insurance in Knoxville, TN
Your landlord's insurance covers the building, not your things. Renters insurance covers your belongings, your liability if someone is hurt in your home or you damage someone else's property, and the cost of living somewhere else while a covered loss is repaired. It's one of the least expensive policies you can buy, and many Knoxville apartment communities require it at move-in.
What renters insurance covers
- Personal property: furniture, clothes, electronics, bikes and kitchen items, at home or away, from covered losses like fire, smoke, theft, wind and burst pipes
- Liability: injuries to guests and damage you accidentally cause, such as a kitchen fire that spreads to the unit next door
- Loss of use: hotel and extra living costs if your apartment becomes unlivable after a covered loss
- Medical payments for minor guest injuries, regardless of fault
Choices that matter
- Replacement cost vs. actual cash value: replacement cost pays to buy new items. Actual cash value subtracts depreciation, which can leave you with very little for a five-year-old couch or laptop.
- Coverage amount: walk through your place and add it up. Most people underestimate.
- Valuables: jewelry, firearms, cameras and collectibles have low built-in limits. Schedule them separately.
- Flood and water backup: flood isn't covered on a standard policy, and water backup is usually an add-on. Ground-floor and basement units should ask.
UT students and young renters
A student living in a dorm may have some coverage under a parent's homeowners policy, but limits are often low and it usually doesn't apply once the student signs their own lease off campus. A renters policy in the student's name is inexpensive and covers their liability too. It's worth setting up for students renting near the University of Tennessee campus, in Fort Sanders or along the Strip.
Bundle with auto
Adding renters insurance to your auto policy often earns a multi-policy discount large enough to offset a good part of the renters premium. Ask us to quote both.
Need proof for your landlord?
Many leases require you to list the property manager as an interested party so they're notified if the policy cancels. Send us the name and address from your lease and we'll add it and send proof of coverage.

Frequently asked questions
Is renters insurance required in Tennessee?
State law doesn't require it, but many landlords and apartment communities in Knoxville require it in the lease and ask for proof at move-in.
Does renters insurance cover my roommate?
Usually not, unless they're a relative living with you or the carrier allows them to be added. Each roommate should normally carry their own policy.
Does renters insurance cover my car?
No. Damage to your car is covered by your auto policy. Belongings stolen from your car, like a laptop, are usually covered by renters insurance.
Does renters insurance cover my dog?
Many renters policies include liability for dog bites, but some carriers limit or exclude certain breeds or dogs with a bite history. Tell us about your pets when you quote.
How much renters insurance do I need?
Enough personal property coverage to replace everything you own, and at least $100,000 of liability. Many renters choose $300,000 of liability because the cost difference is small.
